Chennai/Delhi, 2 December (H.S.): A second landslide hit the Tamil Nadu temple town of Tiruvannamalai on Monday afternoon, just a day after a first landslide led to a boulder falling on a residential building and trapping five to seven people. The first landslide occurred on Sunday due to heavy rainfall from Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Chennai on Saturday.

Despite ongoing rescue efforts, heavy rain and the threat of more landslides have hindered progress. The impact of the cyclone has caused unprecedented floods in various districts of Tamil Nadu, with some areas receiving record amounts of rainfall.

Tragic videos have emerged online of vehicles being swept away by floodwaters. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the remnants of Cyclone Fengal are responsible for the extreme rainfall and are expected to intensify as they move towards the Arabian Sea.

Rainfall alerts have been issued for northern Kerala and southern Karnataka as well.
