New Delhi, 17 November (H.S.):

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence has praised the performance of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in ensuring coastal security along India's vast maritime border. In the review meeting, Director General S. Parmesh briefed the committee on various aspects of ICG operations, including its comprehensive surveillance system, advanced vessel fleet and special response units.

ICG Commander Amit Uniyal said that MP Radha Mohan Singh, while leading the delegation of MPs in Chennai, chaired the meeting. Senior officials of the Ministry of Defence and ICG also attended the meeting. The ICG was represented by Director General S. Parmesh, who briefed the committee on the ICG's operational capabilities, strategic initiatives and preparedness to deal with the country's coastal security challenges.

The meeting focused on the ongoing efforts of the ICG to protect India's maritime interests, improve coordination with various stakeholders and enhance response mechanisms to ensure maritime security. Along with this, the role of ICG in preventing illegal fishing, smuggling and human trafficking which pose a threat to maritime security was also highlighted. The Committee members expressed satisfaction over the recent achievements of the Indian Coast Guard.

The meeting acknowledged the significant progress made by the Force in strengthening coastal security infrastructure, enhancing inter-agency coordination and incorporating cutting-edge technologies. The Parliamentary Standing Committee appreciated the proactive role of the ICG in ensuring the security of India's 11,098 km long coastline and safety of vital maritime trade routes.
