Guwahati, 17 October (HS): Welcoming the decision of the Supreme Court to uphold the validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, State Congress President Bhupen Kumar Bora has called it a historic decision for the Assamese people. Talking to the media today, the Congress President said that in 1985, the then Prime Minister and Congress leader Rajiv Gandhi had signed the Assam Accord. Congress has been in favor of implementing every section of the Assam Accord from the very beginning.

The Congress leader said that the decision to grant citizenship to people coming to Assam from other countries till March 25, 1971 was taken collectively at that time. He said that all the local political parties had agreed on the Assam Accord in those days. The then BJP MP and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee also welcomed this agreement.

The Congress President alleged that the present Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been saying different things about the Assam Accord since joining the BJP.
