Washington, September 08 (H.S.): India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a global initiative aimed at developing next-generation 6G telecommunications networks, the U.S. Department of Commerce said on Monday. In addition, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick met with India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, during the G20 Innovation Ministerial to discuss the future of 6G.

The U.S. Department of Commerce said in a post on X, “We are pleased to announce that India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an effort to ensure that next-generation networks meet our shared security needs, strengthen our competitiveness and promote innovation in 6G.”

The Department of Commerce said in its X post that the agreement was reached following a bilateral meeting between Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, during the G20 Innovation Ministerial. The department wrote, “Lutnick met with India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, during the G20 Innovation Ministerial to discuss the future of 6G.”

The U.S. Department of Commerce said, “We are pleased to announce that India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in this effort to ensure that next-generation networks reflect our shared security priorities, strengthen our competitiveness and promote innovation in 6G.”

It may be noted that India’s Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Jitin Prasada, led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministers’ Meeting held on September 1 and 2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States. The meeting was hosted by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

Referring to his meeting with Lutnick, Prasada said in a post on X that the discussions focused primarily on advancing key sectors that form the foundation of modern technology. Prasada said on X, “Semiconductors, AI, data centres — these are critical pillars of the emerging digital economy.”
