Washington, 30 September (H.S.): Artificial intelligence (AI) will henceforth be referred to as “Super Intelligence” (SI) in the United States, according to an announcement attributed to President Donald Trump at an event at the White House on Tuesday. Trump signed a document seeking to change the terminology used for artificial intelligence. The reported executive order came after a high-level luncheon meeting with leading figures from the technology industry, including SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang.

According to details cited as being available on the White House website, the executive order states that the change will be implemented to the maximum extent permitted by law. Existing rules, contracts and previously issued documents will not be altered. Policymakers dealing with the technology should adopt the federal government’s terminology, with the stated aim of highlighting its transformative potential and unlocking what is described as a vast range of opportunities for the American people.

President Trump said his administration would now use the term “SI” in place of AI. He said references to AI would no longer be accepted in relevant contexts and that the administration would recognise the wide-ranging benefits that the technology could offer the American people. The reported executive order also directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST) to propose a federal definition of “Super Intelligence.”

Trump said the United States was the birthplace of artificial intelligence and was continuing to advance the technology. He said that for more than 70 years, since AI emerged as a field of research, the United States had led the world in its development and application. According to Trump, the term “Super Intelligence” better reflects the capabilities of the technology being developed today. He said it would open new avenues for human creativity and empower Americans to achieve things that had previously been considered impossible.

Alongside the reported terminology change, President Trump also ended what he described as the Biden administration’s excessively interventionist and harmful SI policy. Under Trump’s leadership, the federal government has announced more than $5 billion for the Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at harnessing advanced computational and AI capabilities to accelerate breakthroughs in science, medicine, energy and manufacturing.

In July 2025, the White House released the US “AI Action Plan”, which included a commitment to accelerate innovation in advanced AI. In March 2026, the White House reportedly presented a comprehensive “National Super Intelligence Policy Framework”, containing legislative proposals intended to ensure that the benefits of the technological revolution reach Americans across the country.
