Washington, 03 September (H.S.): US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait”, claiming that the crucial maritime passage is now under American control. His remarks come as the nearly six-month-old conflict between the United States and Iran continues, keeping tensions elevated across the region.

Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, that if the strait is under US control, there was no reason why it should continue to be called the “Strait of Hormuz” instead of the “Trump Strait”. He argued that the proposed name would be more powerful and befitting of the United States.

Shortly afterwards, the White House also shared a map of the Persian Gulf on social media in which the Strait of Hormuz was labelled as the “Trump Strait”. The accompanying post said the name had a distinctive appeal of its own.

Trump’s suggestion is the latest in a series of moves involving the renaming of geographical landmarks during his second term. He has initiated several changes to geographical names, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and restoring the name “Mount McKinley” for Denali, the highest peak in North America.

More recently, amid trade tensions with Canada, Trump also issued an order directing that Lake Ontario be renamed “Lake America”.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages and a critical route for global energy supplies. Trump’s latest remarks have once again drawn attention to the waterway amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
