Kathmandu, 27 September (H.S.): The flood situation in Nepal’s Saptari district has turned critical following three consecutive days of heavy rainfall. Floodwaters have entered settlements in Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality and Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality, submerging around 500 houses and affecting more than 2,000 people.

A total of 483 houses in settlements in Wards No. 5, 7, 12 and 13 of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality have been submerged after floodwaters entered the residential areas. Meanwhile, 17 houses in Wards No. 4 and 5 of Tilathi Koiladi Rural Municipality have also been inundated.

Birendra Majhi, mayor of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality, said floodwaters entered the settlements after the water level in the Saptakoshi River rose on Friday night. He said arrangements have been made to provide flood-affected residents with two meals a day, in the morning and evening, as an immediate relief measure.

Majhi added that once the water level recedes to some extent, the affected families will be identified and provided with additional relief supplies.
