Kathmandu, 25 September (H.S.): Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has proposed the establishment of a “Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism,” led by Nepal, India and China, to address climate-related disasters in the Himalayan region.

Prime Minister Shah made the proposal while addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday morning. He said the Himalayan region is home to nearly two billion people and is also a vital component of the Earth’s life-support systems. Through the proposed mechanism, he emphasised the need to share satellite data, jointly monitor hazardous glacial lakes and strengthen early-warning systems.

Shah said cross-border coordination should be strengthened during disasters. The Himalayan region should be transformed into a laboratory for international cooperation rather than remaining constrained by fragmented information systems.
