Guwahati, 18 September (HS): Assam’s Jogighopa Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) is set to emerge as a major logistics gateway for the Northeast, bringing road, rail, waterways and air connectivity together within a single integrated freight hub.
Spread across 317 acres in Bongaigaon district, the ₹693.97-crore project is being developed with full funding from the Central Government through the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). It is designed to reduce logistics costs, improve cargo handling efficiency and strengthen Assam’s position as a trade gateway to Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
The park’s key advantage is its four-mode connectivity. Located along the Brahmaputra, it has an Inland Water Transport terminal linked to National Waterway-2, enabling cargo movement by river. A dedicated 3-km railway line connects Jogighopa railway station with the park’s internal container yard, while upgraded road links are designed to facilitate freight movement towards Guwahati and other major highways.
The logistics network is further strengthened by road connectivity to the modernised Rupsi Airport, opening possibilities for faster air-cargo movement.
Planned to handle up to 13.3 million metric tonnes of cargo annually, the MMLP will include container yards, custom-bonded warehouses, open storage areas and cold-storage facilities for perishable agricultural products. Dedicated zones for sorting, grading, packaging, labelling and light manufacturing are also planned, allowing businesses to add value to goods before distribution.
The complex is being developed as a self-contained logistics ecosystem, with a truck terminal, parking facilities, fuel stations, administrative and office spaces, retail areas and provisions for hotels and convention facilities.
The project is being implemented in phases, with core handling infrastructure, internal roads and transport linkages moving through final commissioning and operational integration. Jogighopa Logistics Park Limited has been incorporated to oversee the park’s development and operations.
The Northeast Frontier Railway has completed the critical rail connectivity work and carried out pre-non-interlocking inspections at the terminal, marking a key step towards integrated freight operations.
Once fully operational, the Jogighopa MMLP is expected to change the way goods move across the Northeast by shifting freight from fragmented transport networks to an integrated multimodal system. Its strategic location along the Brahmaputra and its links with national road and rail networks could also provide a stronger logistics platform for regional and international trade.-----------
