Washington, 15 September (H.S.): US President Donald Trump on Monday dismissed warnings that artificial intelligence could one day threaten humanity, calling such fears a “hoax”.

Trump said the United States must continue developing AI to remain ahead of China in technology, business and national security. He argued that strict rules could slow American companies and give China an advantage.

His comments came as concerns about the rapid growth of AI increased around the world. Some technology leaders and AI experts have warned that increasingly powerful systems could create serious risks if they are not properly controlled.

Dario Amodei, chief executive of AI company Anthropic, recently called for greater caution in the development of advanced AI. He said companies should give more attention to safety as AI systems become more powerful.

OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and technology entrepreneur Elon Musk have also expressed concerns about the risks associated with advanced AI.

Trump, however, strongly defended continued investment in the technology. He said America needs strong leadership to make sure AI develops in a way that benefits the country.

China is also paying close attention to the issue. On Sunday, September 13, Chinese security officials warned that AI was becoming an important part of the competition between major powers. They also raised concerns about cyberattacks and other possible security threats linked to advanced AI.

The debate comes as governments and technology companies around the world consider how AI should be regulated.

Supporters of rapid AI development say the technology could bring major economic and scientific benefits. Critics argue that stronger safeguards are needed to prevent misuse and unexpected behaviour.

The United Nations is also preparing to discuss AI-related risks, showing how the issue has moved beyond the technology industry and become a matter of international concern.
