Kathmandu, 13 September (H.S.): The Nepal Government is set to provide financial assistance to people displaced by the devastating floods that have struck the country. At a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday, the government decided to provide financial support to families affected by the Bhotekoshi floods to help meet house rent and other essential expenses until permanent housing is constructed.

Communications Minister Bikram Timilsina said families comprising up to four members would receive Rs 15,000 per month. In addition, it was decided that Rs 2,000 would be provided for each additional family member. Families that do not wish to receive the financial assistance will also be offered the option of temporary accommodation arranged by the government until permanent housing is built.

Minister Timilsina said through social media that forms have already been sent to all concerned local-level authorities to collect the necessary details in this regard. He said the government has completed an initial assessment of the losses and damage caused by the floods, while a detailed assessment of the requirements is currently underway.

Based on the assessment, the necessary resources will be mobilised and reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts will be expedited, he said.
