BISHKEK, September 1 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) signed 28 documents at the organization's summit in Bishkek on Tuesday, covering regional security, nuclear safety, artificial intelligence, climate change, economic cooperation and humanitarian issues, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

The documents include the Bishkek Declaration marking the SCO's 25th anniversary and amendments to the organization's 2002 Charter aimed at updating its administrative framework.

The SCO Council of Heads of State also adopted a declaration on strengthening multilateral partnership in nuclear and physical nuclear security, while approving regulations for the executive committee of the SCO Anti-Drug Center.

The member states agreed on a comprehensive program to coordinate efforts against synthetic drugs and their precursors through 2030, as well as a plan to strengthen international information security cooperation for 2026-2028.

Security cooperation remained a key focus of the summit, with leaders also approving the establishment of a Universal Centre for Countering Security Challenges and measures to combat transnational crime and other security threats.

The SCO also expanded cooperation in emerging technologies. Leaders approved a conceptual framework for developing regional data centers, increasing computing capacity and promoting an integrated artificial intelligence industry among member states. A separate intergovernmental memorandum on AI cooperation was also signed.

The summit adopted measures on environmental cooperation, including a joint action plan on biodiversity conservation through 2031 and a memorandum on climate change mitigation. Leaders also endorsed the Green Technology Corridor program to promote scientific and technological cooperation through 2030.

Economic and infrastructure cooperation was another major area of the agreements. The member states approved a five-year roadmap for expanding ports and logistics hubs and adopted measures aimed at improving energy efficiency and integrating regional power systems.

The SCO also signed a memorandum of understanding with the African Union Commission, further expanding its international cooperation. Pakistan's Lahore was designated the SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2026-2027.

The summit additionally produced statements supporting the institution of the family and providing assistance to states affected by emergencies.

The Bishkek summit brought together Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, among other leaders.

The summit marked the end of Kyrgyzstan's rotating presidency of the SCO, with Pakistan taking over the chairmanship and set to host the next SCO heads of state summit in 2027.
