BISHKEK, September 1 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday called for expanding the UN Security Council to include countries from the Global South and East.

It is important to make efforts to increase the effectiveness of its activities. To expand representation in its bodies, including the Security Council, with countries from the Global South and East, the Russian president said during a meeting in the SCO+ format at the the SCO summit.

The United Nations serves as a unique platform for dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation, Putin added.

The Russian leader arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Monday to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Kyrgyzstan is hosting the summit in its role as chair of the organization this year. Events under the SCO and SCO+ formats will be attended by representatives of 17 countries and six international organizations.
