MOSCOW, August 29 (HS/RIA Novosti) - Russia ranks fifth in the world in terms of coal reserves, which stood at 273.2 billion tonnes at the beginning of 2026, the Russian Natural Resources Ministry told RIA Novosti.

Russia has a large coal resource base and ranks fifth after China, the United States, India and Australia, the ministry said.

Russia's coal reserves rose to 273.2 billion tonnes in 2026, up by 825.6 million tonnes from 2025.

Data from the Russian Federal Service for State Statistics (Rosstat) shows that Russia's coal production fell by nearly 2% year-on-year in January-July 2026, to 249 million tonnes.
