MOSCOW, August 19 (HS/RIA Novosti) - French President Emmanuel Macron has signed a law legalizing euthanasia in the country, according to the text of the document published in the government gazette Journal Officiel.

In mid‑July, this initiative was approved by the French parliament, after which the country's constitutional council ruled on August 14 that the law complies with the French Constitution.

The President of the Republic has approved this law, the document read.

The law provides for the right to euthanasia in France for people who are in the late or final stage of a severe and terminal disease that threatens their life. The procedure will become possible if a person is experiencing suffering due to the illness that cannot be alleviated by therapy or becomes unbearable when treatment is discontinued. Individuals over 18 years of age who hold French citizenship or are lawfully residing in the country on a permanent basis will be able to request assisted dying.
