Kolkata, 16 August (H.S.): West Bengal has recorded the highest participation in self-enumeration under Census 2027 among all states and Union Territories in the country. According to a press release issued by the state government's Department of Home and Hill Affairs, a total of 53,13,589 families had initiated the self-enumeration process in the state as of August 15, 2026, of which 49,86,017 families had successfully completed the process.

The overall completion rate of self-enumeration in West Bengal stood at 93.84 per cent, while the process was still underway for 3,27,572 families at various stages.

The self-enumeration facility for Census 2027 was formally launched in West Bengal on August 1, 2026. The initiative received a strong response from citizens across the state, with the government attributing the achievement to active public participation and extensive awareness campaigns conducted through print, electronic and social media.

According to the government, awareness and mobilisation campaigns were carried out across all 23 districts of the state. With a large number of families participating through the self-enumeration facility, West Bengal has emerged as the state with the highest number of families covered through self-enumeration in the country.

Among the districts, Malda and North 24 Parganas were among the better-performing districts in terms of self-enumeration.

Following the successful conclusion of the self-enumeration campaign on August 15, the Department of Home and Hill Affairs expressed its gratitude to the people of West Bengal for their active and enthusiastic participation. The department also appreciated the efforts of the officials and employees of the Directorate of Census Operations, West Bengal, for their role in implementing the exercise.
