Guwahati, 16 August (HS): The Assam Police on Saturday observed a Mourning Day at its headquarters to remember the innocent children and others who lost their lives in the bomb blast during an Independence Day programme in Dhemaji on August 15, 2004.

Senior police officers, personnel and employees from various sections attended the programme. During the observance, participants took a pledge to work for peace, social harmony and better understanding among people from all sections of society, protect human life and values, and fight against destructive forces.

The pledge was administered by Deputy Inspector General of Police (Administration) Pranab Jyoti Goswami.

According to court documents, 13 people, including 10 schoolchildren and three women, were killed in the blast, while more than 40 people were injured. The Assam Police observes Mourning Day every year on August 16 in memory of the victims.

Similar programmes were also held at district police headquarters across Assam.----------
