Kolkata, 16 August (H.S.): Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday expressed grief over the death of former West Bengal Assembly Deputy Speaker and former Rampurhat MLA Ashish Banerjee, describing the incident as deeply tragic and raising concerns over the limits of political and media discourse.

In a social media post, Abhishek said the death of Ashish Banerjee was not only heartbreaking but should also make everyone who believes in responsible politics and journalism reflect on the consequences of public allegations and campaigns.

Describing Ashish Banerjee as a lifelong teacher and public servant, Abhishek said he had dedicated several decades of his life to serving people with honesty, dignity and simplicity. He said Banerjee was a highly respected figure among the people of Rampurhat and a source of pride for Birbhum district.

Referring to the alleged suicide note left behind by Ashish Banerjee, Abhishek said the note mentioned the pain caused by what he described as sustained propaganda and attempts to tarnish his reputation. He said this aspect could not be ignored.

Abhishek also criticised the BJP and a section of the media, saying they should reflect on the consequences of a political environment where allegations are repeatedly amplified and a person's lifelong reputation is put on trial before the truth is established.

He said those who were allegedly part of such a campaign should reflect on the human consequences of their words and actions.

“Political battles will come and go. But once a life is lost, it can never be brought back,” Abhishek said.

Expressing condolences to Ashish Banerjee's family, former students, admirers and well-wishers, Abhishek said Bengal had lost one of its honest and principled sons.

He prayed for strength for the bereaved family and concluded his message with “Om Shanti.”
