New Delhi, 14 August (H.S.):

BJP MP Anurag Thakur launched a sharp attack on the Congress over remarks made by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, questioning his political language and conduct. Thakur said differences of opinion were an integral part of democracy, but indecorous remarks and disrespect towards constitutional offices could not be accepted.

Targeting Rahul Gandhi, Thakur said the people had rejected the Congress and Gandhi three consecutive times and alleged that they had now resorted to the politics of abusive language. Describing Gandhi's remarks as “indecorous” and “arrogant”, Thakur said his statements exposed the mindset of the Congress.

The BJP MP also accused Rahul Gandhi of being anti-women. He claimed that Gandhi opposed women's reservation and also raised the issue of an alleged derogatory remark concerning a foreign woman. Thakur said such remarks reflected the mindset of Rahul Gandhi and the Congress and questioned Gandhi's upbringing and political conduct.

Thakur also attacked Rahul Gandhi's performance as Leader of Opposition, alleging that he had failed both inside and outside Parliament. According to Thakur, Gandhi had prevented discussions in Parliament and, when an opportunity for discussion arose, had failed to offer substantive suggestions on the issue of paper leaks.

Accusing the Congress of adopting double standards, Thakur said the party preached one kind of political discourse to others while conducting itself differently. He maintained that disagreement and questioning were natural components of democratic politics, but stressed that maintaining decorum in political discourse and respecting constitutional institutions were equally important.
