New Delhi, 13 August (H.S.): Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has approached the Supreme Court challenging multiple petitions pending before the Allahabad High Court that allege he possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is scheduled to hear the matter on August 17.

Rahul Gandhi has also sought the transfer of the proceedings pending before the Allahabad High Court to the Delhi High Court.

In May, the Allahabad High Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to ascertain details of Rahul Gandhi’s assets. The petition before the Allahabad High Court was filed by S Vignesh, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who alleged that Rahul Gandhi possessed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

While hearing the petition, the High Court directed verification of the allegations made by the petitioner. It also observed that the CBI or ED could take appropriate action in accordance with law, if warranted.

During a hearing in July, the Allahabad High Court expressed dissatisfaction with an affidavit submitted by the CBI, observing that the document did not comply with the directions issued by the court.

The matter has now reached the Supreme Court, where Rahul Gandhi has challenged the proceedings and sought relief against the orders and petitions pending before the Allahabad High Court.
