Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said the Congress has always believed in uniting the country and maintaining its social cohesion, while alleging that some people are attempting to create divisions among the people.

Addressing the national convention of Rachnatmak Congress, a wing of the Congress party, Kharge said the party’s ideology has consistently been centred on keeping the entire country united and together. In contrast, he alleged, some people today are seeking to create divisions among citizens.

Kharge accused the government of working to undermine the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr B.R. Ambedkar. He said these national leaders had envisioned an India in which people from all sections of society would move forward together.

Kharge also expressed concern over the nature of advertisements aired on television. “It saddens me that advertisements for paan masala, edible oil and many other products are being broadcast on television today,” he said.

Instead, he argued, greater emphasis should be placed on showcasing the country’s achievements, the contributions of freedom fighters and their ideals.

Kharge stressed the need to take the ideas and contributions of India’s freedom fighters to younger generations so that a generation of patriotic citizens could be nurtured.

He called for efforts to bring people together rather than divide them and emphasised the importance of taking all sections of society along in the country’s progress.
