New Delhi, 13 August (H.S.):
Most parts of the country are likely to receive light to heavy rainfall through next week, while Delhi-NCR is also expected to witness continued spells of light rain, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD has forecast light rain at several places across Delhi-NCR between Friday afternoon and evening. The national capital is expected to record minimum and maximum temperatures of around 26-28 degrees Celsius and 33-35 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Light rainfall is also likely in Delhi on Saturday and Sunday. The maximum temperature is expected to remain between 32-34 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 33-35 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The national capital witnessed sunshine during the morning on Thursday, followed by light rain in the afternoon. The showers provided some relief from the humid conditions, although the weather remained sultry.
According to the weather department, a depression over coastal West Bengal is likely to bring very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chhattisgarh on August 14. Heavy rain is also expected at isolated places across the western Himalayan region and the plains of northwest India on several days during the week.
In northwest India, isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Himachal Pradesh on August 15-16 and 19; Uttarakhand on August 15 and 18-19; Punjab from August 14-19; Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from August 14-19; western Uttar Pradesh from August 14-18; eastern Uttar Pradesh from August 14-18; and eastern Rajasthan on August 14.
Very heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh on August 17-18 and Uttarakhand on August 16-17.
In central India, isolated heavy rainfall is expected over western Madhya Pradesh on August 14-15; eastern Madhya Pradesh on August 14 and 18; Vidarbha from August 14-16; and Chhattisgarh on August 14 and August 16-17. Western Madhya Pradesh, eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are likely to experience isolated spells of very heavy rainfall during the next five to six days.
In eastern India, rainfall activity is expected to continue from August 14-19 over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Odisha, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in these regions during the period.
In northeast India, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast over Arunachal Pradesh on August 14 and August 18-19; Assam and Meghalaya from August 14-19; and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from August 14-16 and on August 19.
Rainfall is also expected over the western parts of the country, including Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Gujarat.
In south peninsular India, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, north interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Telangana from August 14-19. Kerala, Mahe and Lakshadweep are likely to receive similar rainfall activity on August 18-19.
The IMD has also forecast fairly widespread rainfall over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal during the next five to six days.
During the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall of 21 cm was recorded in Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha, while Jharkhand and eastern Rajasthan received 12-20 cm. Western Uttar Pradesh, western Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka and Meghalaya recorded 7-11 cm of rainfall.
