New Delhi, 12 August (H.S.):
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran on Wednesday announced that he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, and has requested the board to begin the process of identifying his successor at the earliest.
In a statement, the 63-year-old Chandrasekaran said he had completed 40 years of his professional career with the Tata Group and described his association with the institution as deeply fulfilling. He said leading Tata Sons for nearly a decade had been a matter of great honour as well as a profound responsibility.
Chandrasekaran said the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved to extend his tenure for another five years and had recommended the extension. The proposal was also recorded and recommended by the Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the board of Tata Sons.
However, he said that at a board meeting held on February 24, 2026, he chose to defer the decision after the proposal did not receive unanimous support.
Chandrasekaran said that six months had passed without a decision being reached, while Tata Sons was entering critical implementation stages across several strategic initiatives. In these circumstances, he said, clarity was essential regarding the leadership of the group beyond February 2027.
He therefore requested the board to take an early decision on succession to ensure a smooth and orderly transition. Chandrasekaran concluded his statement by expressing gratitude to all stakeholders for their continued support.
Chandrasekaran became Chairman of Tata Sons in 2017 after previously serving as Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Under his leadership, TCS recorded significant growth in the global information technology services sector.
During his tenure at the helm of Tata Sons, the Tata Group pursued a broad strategy focused on digital transformation, international expansion and strategic investments. The group also acquired Air India, expanded investments in electric vehicles and renewable energy, and accelerated the adoption of new technologies across its businesses.
Chandrasekaran has been credited with steering the Tata Group through a period of significant transformation and strengthening its position in global markets. His decision not to seek another term is expected to set in motion the process for selecting the next chairman of Tata Sons.
