Bogota, Colombia, 11 August (H.S.): Colombia has declared a national disaster following a devastating earthquake that has killed at least 132 people and injured 572 others, according to authorities.

The country was struck by a 7.4-magnitude earthquake at 7:34 a.m. on Monday, followed by a 4.8-magnitude tremor at 8:18 a.m. Both earthquakes were centred in the municipality of San José del Palmar in the western department of Chocó, according to the Colombian Geological Service. The first earthquake occurred at a depth of 98 kilometres, while the second was recorded at a depth of 88 kilometres.

Local residents and rescue teams have been searching through the rubble of collapsed buildings as emergency operations continue across the worst-affected areas. President Abelardo de la Espriella declared a national disaster following reports of extensive destruction in several cities.

The president said at least 132 people had been killed and 572 injured in the disaster. Pereira and Cali were among the worst-hit cities, with authorities confirming dozens of fatalities in the affected areas.

At least 61 buildings collapsed following the powerful tremors, while more than 1,600 homes were damaged or destroyed, the president said. Dozens of healthcare facilities, community centres and roads were also damaged.

Following the earthquakes, seven airports in Armenia, Cali, Manizales, Pereira, Quibdó, Buenaventura and Cartago reportedly suspended operations amid concerns over damage and safety.

Authorities said there were no reports of building collapses in the capital, Bogota. Tremors were also felt in neighbouring Venezuela, Ecuador and Panama.

The disaster came shortly after a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Santa Ana del Táchira municipality in Venezuela at 12:57 a.m. late on August 9.
