New Delhi, 28 July (H.S.): Amid continuous uproar by Opposition members, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. As the disruptions continued, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the proceedings of the House until 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

After the post-lunch session resumed, Deputy Chairman Harivansh began the government’s legislative business and allowed Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Jitan Ram Manjhi to introduce the MSME Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

Introducing the Bill, Manjhi said that amendments were required in the MSME Development Act, 2006, in view of changing circumstances over the years. He said the proposed amendments aim to make provisions related to ensuring timely payments to MSME units more effective, strengthen penalties for violations of rules, and enhance provisions related to fines.

The minister said that through the amendments, certain business-related procedures are being made mandatory, which will help micro, small and medium enterprises receive their pending payments more efficiently and bring greater transparency to commercial transactions.

Meanwhile, Opposition members continued raising slogans over the alleged police action against protesters during the NEET paper leak demonstrations in the national capital. The Opposition demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the issue in the House, while members from the ruling side opposed the demand.

Amid the continued disruptions, Deputy Chairman Harivansh appealed to Opposition members to allow the House to function. However, as the protests did not subside, the Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 11 a.m. on July 29.
