New Delhi, 28 July (H.S.): Indian Railways has approved the upgradation of the electric traction system on the Parbhani-Mudkhed double-line railway section of the Nanded Division under South Central Railway, with the aim of enhancing network capacity and improving operational efficiency. The project, estimated to cost ₹163 crore, will also include essential works related to power supply infrastructure.

The Ministry of Railways said on Tuesday that under the project, the existing 1x25 kV electric traction system along the 164-track-kilometre-long section will be upgraded to the modern 2x25 kV system. The power supply infrastructure will also be strengthened to handle the increased electrical load.

The Parbhani-Mudkhed railway section is strategically important as it forms part of the Highly Utilised Network (HUN) Route-9, which connects Ajmer-Indore-Khandwa-Akola-Purna-Mudkhed-Secunderabad-Mahbubnagar-Dhone.

According to the ministry, the traction system upgrade will ensure a more reliable and robust power supply for train operations on the route. It will increase freight transportation capacity and provide better support for the operation of modern trains, including Vande Bharat Express services.

Railways stated that the project will also make a significant contribution towards achieving the target of transporting 3,000 million tonnes of freight by 2029-30. The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to modernise electrical infrastructure on high-density routes and enhance overall operational efficiency.
