Kolkata, 27 July (H.S.): The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression between Monday morning and noon before making landfall between Canning in West Bengal and Chandbali in Odisha, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather system is moving northwestwards at a speed of about 5 kmph. As of Sunday afternoon, it was located close to the West Bengal coast and the northern Odisha coastline.

The IMD has forecast strong winds over the coastal districts. Wind speeds are expected to reach 55–65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph on Monday, while on Tuesday, winds are likely to blow at 35–45 kmph, with gusts up to 55 kmph.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been forecast for Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram on Monday. Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas are also expected to experience thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds with speeds of 50–60 kmph.

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for parts of Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram and South 24 Parganas, while a Yellow Alert has been issued for Bankura and Purulia. Winds of 30–40 kmph are likely across several other districts of the state.

On Tuesday, a Yellow Alert will remain in force for Purba Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Purulia and Jhargram, with the possibility of thunderstorms, moderate rainfall and winds of 30–40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph.

The weather office has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rain across several districts of South Bengal from Wednesday to Saturday.

Meanwhile, North Bengal is expected to receive light rainfall on Sunday and Monday. From Tuesday to Saturday, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are likely to witness heavy rainfall, prompting the IMD to issue a Yellow Alert for these districts.
