New Delhi, 27 July (H.S.): Shortly after being discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, along with his wife Gitanjali Angmo, visited Rajghat in Delhi on Monday and paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking to reporters, Sonam Wangchuk said, After the conclusion of the protest, I wanted to express my gratitude to Bapu. I also want to thank all the citizens of the country who participated in the peaceful movement. I would like to convey the message that the path shown by Mahatma Gandhi remains as relevant and correct today as it was 100 years ago. Therefore, to achieve our resolve, we must continue to appeal peacefully.

Commenting on the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Wangchuk said he hoped that once the resignation is accepted, it would lead to a positive outcome and mark the beginning of meaningful reforms in the country. He said that the right solutions can only be achieved through healthy dialogue and mutual respect. After thorough deliberation, the country should adopt a system that serves its best interests.

It may be noted that Wangchuk had undertaken a 26-day hunger strike during the student movement led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which continued for nearly 37 days at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. During the protest, his health deteriorated, following which he was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Later, he was shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, from where he was discharged on Monday.

The protest was held demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak issue. Following the agitation, the Education Minister resigned from his post on Saturday. Along with this, CJP had also demanded reforms in the country’s education and examination systems to prevent such irregularities in the future. The government has also assured action on the concerns raised by the students.
