New Delhi, 27 July (H.S.):

Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk, who observed a prolonged hunger strike during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student movement, was discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Monday. Wangchuk shared the update through a video posted on X.

In the video, Wangchuk said, I am being discharged from the hospital. I will visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then return to the mountains. He also expressed gratitude to the doctors and medical staff at Medanta Hospital for their care and support during his treatment.

Notably, Wangchuk had observed a 26-day hunger strike during the nearly 37-day-long CJP-led student protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. After his health deteriorated, he was initially admitted to Safdarjung Hospital before being shifted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, from where he was discharged on Monday.

The protest was centred on demands for the resignation of then Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak controversy. Following sustained protests, Pradhan resigned on Saturday.

In addition to seeking the minister's resignation, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) also demanded comprehensive reforms in India's education and examination system to prevent future instances of paper leaks and examination irregularities. According to the organisers, the government has also assured them that these concerns will be addressed.
