Morigaon (Assam), 27 July (HS): Although the flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement, its impact continues to take a toll on wildlife. An adult one-horned rhinoceros was found dead on Monday morning in the Tamulidova area of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
According to Forest Department sources, there is no evidence of poaching. Preliminary findings suggest that the rhino may have died due to health-related complications or after becoming weak while struggling against the floodwaters.
The rhino's horn was recovered intact. Pobitora Range Officer Ujjwal Choudhury confirmed that the horn has been safely secured by the Forest Department. A post-mortem examination of the carcass has been initiated to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department has intensified monitoring and protection measures across the sanctuary to ensure the safety and movement of wild animals in view of the prevailing flood situation.----------
