New Delhi, 27 July (H.S.):

Opposition Members of Parliament staged a protest at Parliament's Makar Dwar on Monday morning, demanding accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20. The demonstration was led by Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The protesting MPs raised slogans and alleged that the Home Minister was directly responsible for the police action against the students. They asserted that the issue would be forcefully raised inside Parliament.

Earlier in the day, leaders of the INDIA bloc held a meeting at the office of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The meeting was attended by Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Pramod Tiwari, Syed Naseer Hussain, K.C. Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi, Jairam Ramesh and several other Opposition leaders.

During the meeting, the alliance decided to continue raising the issue of the student protests both inside and outside Parliament, while pressing the government for answers over the police action.

Notably, on July 20, students under the leadership of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) organised a march towards Parliament. During the protest, police used baton charges, tear gas shells and, according to allegations by the protesters and Opposition leaders, pellet guns to disperse the crowd. The clashes reportedly left more than 100 students and several police personnel injured.

Since the incident, Opposition parties have continued to express support for the students and have intensified pressure on the government, demanding accountability and a discussion on the matter in Parliament.
