Murshidabad, 27 July (H.S.): The police in West Bengal's Murshidabad district have foiled a major narcotics trafficking attempt along the India-Bangladesh border by seizing 3.176 kg of heroin valued at nearly ₹5 crore in the international market. Two accused have been arrested in connection with the case.
Acting on a tip-off, personnel from Lalgola Police Station conducted a raid in the Nabagram area early on Monday. During the operation, two suspects were detained and searched. Police recovered 1,460 grams of heroin from one accused and 1,704 grams from the other, taking the total seizure to 3,176 grams.
The arrested accused have been identified as Nimai Sarkar, a resident of Durlabhpur under Lalgola Police Station, and Momin Sheikh, a resident of Ataroshia under the same police station.
Both accused were produced before the NDPS Court in Berhampore on Monday. The police sought 10 days' custody to interrogate them and investigate the larger drug trafficking network.
Murshidabad has witnessed several cases of narcotics smuggling in recent times, with investigators suspecting that drugs are being trafficked through the India-Bangladesh border. Police said they have intensified surveillance and continue to conduct regular anti-narcotics operations.
Notably, just two days earlier, Lalgola Police had arrested another accused, Sahabuddin, from Sisaramjanpur with 392 grams of heroin, along with a motorcycle and a mobile phone. The seized heroin was estimated to be worth several lakh rupees.
The latest seizure has raised fresh concerns over the source of such large consignments of heroin entering Murshidabad. Police are investigating the supply chain and possible cross-border links behind the trafficking racket.
