Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday announced a cash reward of ₹30 lakh for Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships silver medallist Raja Muthupandi, honouring the athlete's outstanding performance in the men's 65kg category in Glasgow, Scotland. The announcement came after the Tamil Nadu lifter clinched the silver medal, adding another international achievement to India's growing tally at the championship.
Congratulating the weightlifter, Vijay said Raja Muthupandi had brought immense pride to both Tamil Nadu and the nation through his determination and exceptional performance on the international stage. He said the State government would continue to recognise and encourage athletes who excel in global competitions.
The Chief Minister noted that the weightlifter's achievement reflected years of hard work, perseverance and dedication. He expressed confidence that Muthupandi's success would inspire young sportspersons across Tamil Nadu to pursue excellence and represent India with distinction in international events.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, currently being held in Glasgow, has brought together nearly 3,000 athletes from 74 countries. India has fielded a 123-member contingent across various events and has continued to strengthen its medal tally through impressive performances.
Representing India in the men's 65kg category, Raja Muthupandi, a native of Thoothukudi district, displayed remarkable resilience throughout the competition. In the snatch event, he missed his opening attempt at 126kg but recovered to successfully lift the weight in his second attempt. His final attempt at 129kg was unsuccessful, giving him a best lift of 126kg.
In the clean and jerk section, Muthupandi again bounced back after failing in his opening attempt at 158kg. He successfully lifted 160kg in his second attempt to finish with a combined total of 286kg, securing the silver medal.
Announcing the ₹30 lakh cash incentive, Vijay said the State would honour the athlete's achievement with one of Tamil Nadu's highest sports rewards. Wishing him greater success in the future, the Chief Minister expressed hope that Raja Muthupandi would continue to win medals and bring further glory to Tamil Nadu and India.
