Durgapur, 21 July (H.S.): In a rare display of political courtesy, BJP workers in Durgapur on Tuesday offered water and biscuits to Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters travelling to Kolkata for the party's July 21 Martyrs' Day programme.
Led by Tejnarayan Pandey, president of BJP's Ward No. 3 Mandal in Durgapur West Assembly constituency, party workers gathered at the railway station with refreshments for TMC workers. However, they claimed that despite waiting for a long time, they found hardly any TMC supporters at the station or on the trains.
Pandey said the initiative was aimed at promoting democratic values and political civility. He alleged that during the previous TMC regime, BJP programmes were frequently obstructed and party workers faced arrests and false cases. After the change in government, we wanted to set a different example by extending courtesy to our political opponents, he said.
The gesture stood out as an uncommon instance of political goodwill in West Bengal's otherwise fiercely competitive political landscape.
