Guwahati, 20 July (HS): The flood situation in Upper Assam has turned critical following incessant rainfall, with several areas including Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Nazira, Amguri and Sonari witnessing widespread inundation.

Minister Bimal Bora on Monday visited Cherekapara in Sivasagar district to assess the flood situation and interact with affected residents. The overflowing Jaji and Dikhow rivers are flowing above the danger mark, triggering severe flooding across the region.

In Jorhat, the Bhogdoi River has assumed a dangerous form, with floodwaters overtopping and breaching embankments at several locations, damaging roads and disrupting communication. The flood has left thousands of residents struggling as breaches in embankments and roads continue to worsen.

Meanwhile, after the Simaluguri section, floodwaters have also eroded the Nazira–Mezenga railway track. Nearly half of the railway embankment has already been washed away by the strong current, raising fears that the rail line could collapse into the Dikhow River at any moment if the erosion continues. Railway authorities are closely monitoring the situation.------------
