Kolkata, 20 July (H.S.): The police have arrested another accused in connection with the explosion at Rajarhat's Suparibagan area, taking the total number of arrests in the case to three. The latest arrest was made after sustained interrogation of the prime accused, Mohammad Shamim alias Selim, the police said on Monday.
The newly arrested accused has been identified as Mohammad Hossain, who was apprehended from the Rajbati area of Madhyamgram. Investigators are now probing his exact role in the incident and will seek his custody for further questioning.
The explosion occurred on Saturday at a rented house in South Narayanpur, Rajarhat, leaving one person injured. According to the investigation, Shamim had rented a room in the house a few days before the incident. On the day of the blast, a minor allegedly delivered a white bag to the room. Minutes after the bag was left inside, a powerful explosion took place. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, triggering panic among local residents.
The police rushed to the spot and recovered two live crude bombs, which were later defused by the Bomb Disposal Squad. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) also visited the site as part of the investigation. Investigators suspect that the rented room was being used to store explosives.
Earlier, the police had arrested the prime accused, Mohammad Shamim alias Selim, along with a local property broker, Shahenshah, who allegedly helped him rent the room using a false identity.
With the arrest of Mohammad Hossain, police are now trying to uncover the wider network behind the case. Further investigation is underway.
