Imphal, 20 July (HS): A late-night attack at a residence in Manipur's Imphal East district claimed the life of a 52-year-old man and left his wife critically injured in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. in Keirao Wangkhem locality when unidentified assailants allegedly forced their way into the couple's home and attacked them with a firearm and a sharp-edged weapon.

The deceased has been identified as N. Thambou (52), who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His wife, N. Keinatombi Devi (53), sustained severe injuries and was shifted to Shija Hospitals, where she remains in critical condition.

Police have sent Thambou's body to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Authorities have registered a case and launched an investigation. The motive behind the attack is yet to be determined and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.-----------
