Kolkata, 20 July (H.S.) : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across West Bengal on Monday as monsoon activity remains active over the region. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in several districts of North Bengal, while South Bengal is expected to witness light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms.

According to the IMD, the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Continuous rain may trigger landslides in the hilly areas and waterlogging in low-lying regions.

In South Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, cloudy skies are expected to prevail with light to moderate rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are also likely at isolated places.

The weather office said the maximum temperature is expected to remain around 31–32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may hover near 26 degrees Celsius. High humidity levels are likely to persist, resulting in uncomfortable and humid conditions despite the rainfall.

The administration has advised people in vulnerable areas of North Bengal to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and adverse weather.
