Kolkata, 20 July (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday assured the mother of the young doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024 that justice would be delivered in the case.

According to Assembly sources, the Chief Minister met the victim's mother, now a BJP MLA from Panihati, after his address in the State Assembly. During their interaction, Adhikari assured her that both the BJP and the West Bengal government stood firmly with her family and were committed to ensuring justice for her daughter.

The Chief Minister reportedly said his government would not tolerate the alleged lapses in the investigation that occurred under the previous administration. He also stated that action would be taken against those who were allegedly responsible for negligence or for obstructing the investigation.

Speaking later on the issue, Minister of State for Home Vishal Lama said every person involved in the crime would face punishment. He added that the Chief Minister had already taken all necessary steps regarding the investigation and reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring justice without sparing anyone found guilty.

The case relates to the rape and murder of a duty doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 8, 2024, an incident that triggered nationwide outrage. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested in connection with the crime and was later sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, allegations subsequently surfaced that evidence related to the crime had been destroyed during the Reclaim the Night mobilisation at the hospital on August 14, 2024. Following directions from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the probe. While the trial has progressed in the lower court, demands for complete justice and accountability in the case have continued.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the victim's mother contested the Panihati seat as a BJP candidate and defeated Trinamool Congress nominee Tirthankar Ghosh by a margin of more than 28,000 votes.
