Kolkata, 02 July (H.S.): An FIR has been registered against Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee at Kolkata's Kalighat Police Station for alleged violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The police confirmed the development on Thursday.

According to the police, the case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by Rajeev Sarkar, a resident of Baguiati. The complainant alleged that security personnel accompanying Banerjee frequently travel while standing on the footrests of moving vehicles, violating road safety regulations and endangering the lives of other road users.

The complaint stated that Section 123 of the Motor Vehicles Act prohibits travelling by hanging onto or riding in an unsafe manner on a moving vehicle, while Section 184 deals with dangerous driving. Citing these provisions, the complainant sought appropriate legal action against the Trinamool Congress leader.

Police have registered the case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 281 (rash or negligent driving endangering human life), Sections 125, 223 and 3(5), along with applicable provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Abhishek Banerjee has previously faced investigations by central agencies in connection with alleged corruption-related cases, including probes by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He has also been involved in controversies relating to an alleged signature discrepancy and remarks allegedly made in connection with the statement, DJs will play after May 4.

Meanwhile, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has withdrawn the interim relief earlier granted to Banerjee in a defamation case filed by Akash Vijayvargiya, son of BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Separately, allegations of corruption have also been raised over Banerjee's Sebashray initiative launched in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency. However, no court has delivered a final ruling on those allegations so far.

As of now, Abhishek Banerjee has not issued any official response regarding the registration of the FIR in the Motor Vehicles Act case.
