New Delhi, 02 July (H.S.):

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday expressed deep concern over the devastating floods and landslides that have affected Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Sikkim. He said the disaster had claimed several lives and displaced thousands of families. Extending his condolences to the bereaved families, Kharge said the Congress Party stands firmly with every affected person.

In a post on X, Kharge said the promises made by the NDA governments, including the commitment in Assam's 2016 Vision Document to make the state flood-free, had failed to materialise. He alleged that floods have now become an annual tragedy, while the government's preparedness and efforts to implement long-term solutions have remained grossly inadequate.

Kharge demanded the immediate utilisation of the PM CARES Fund to provide adequate compensation, comprehensive rehabilitation, and sustained relief to the affected families.

He said the nation is proud of its Armed Forces, as well as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, which have been working tirelessly in rescue and relief operations. However, considering the scale of the humanitarian crisis, he said the government should deploy additional resources, financial assistance, and personnel to accelerate rescue efforts, rebuild damaged infrastructure, and ensure that no affected family is left behind.

Kharge also appealed to Congress leaders and party workers to extend every possible assistance to people affected by the floods in the northeastern states.
