Thiruvananthapuram, 19 July (H.S.):Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Kerala on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for five districts as monsoon activity remains active over the state.

The weather department has forecast isolated spells of heavy rain in the alerted districts. In IMD terminology, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Authorities have advised residents, particularly those living in vulnerable and low-lying areas, to remain cautious as intermittent downpours may lead to waterlogging and localized disruptions.

The rainfall is expected to shift northwards on Monday, with Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts placed under a Yellow Alert. Officials are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and have urged the public to stay updated through official advisories.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a coastal inundation warning under the Kallakkadal phenomenon for several parts of Kerala's coastline on Monday. The alert covers the Thiruvananthapuram coast from Kappil to Pozhiyoor, the Kollam coast from Alappad to Edava, and the Alappuzha coast from Chellanam to Azhikkal Jetty.

According to INCOIS, unusually high waves ranging from 1.0 metre to 1.5 metres are likely between 8.30 am and 11.30 pm, increasing the risk of sea incursion and coastal flooding in vulnerable stretches. Residents living close to the shoreline, along with fishermen and beachgoers, have been advised to exercise extreme caution and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities.

A similar warning has also been issued for the Kanyakumari coast in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. High waves of 1.2 metres to 1.6 metres are expected between 5.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, raising the possibility of coastal erosion and sea surges.

Disaster management authorities have urged people residing along the coast to remain vigilant, avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period, and cooperate with officials to ensure public safety as adverse weather conditions persist.
