Guwahati, 19 July (HS): Assam Police opened fire on an accused thief after he allegedly attempted to escape from police custody during a recovery operation in Guwahati's Jalukbari area early hours on Sunday.

The injured accused has been identified as Ajanabi Ali, a resident of Barpeta, who was arrested by Jalukbari Police in connection with a major theft case.

According to police sources, goods worth around ₹7 lakh were stolen from RK Traders at Maligaon on July 7. During the investigation, police arrested Ajanabi Ali for his alleged involvement in the burglary.

On Saturday late night, a police team took the accused to recover the stolen items. However, upon reaching the spot, he allegedly tried to flee by taking advantage of the situation.

To prevent his escape, police opened fire and a bullet struck him in the leg. The accused was immediately overpowered and rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.

Police said the injured accused is undergoing treatment under tight security at the hospital. The incident has created a sensation in the city, while further investigation into the theft case is underway.-----------
