Thiruvananthapuram, 19 July (H.S.):Football fever has gripped Kerala, with the state government declaring Monday a holiday for all educational institutions to enable students to watch the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The decision comes as lakhs of football fans across the state prepare for one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

The holiday, announced on the directions of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, covers schools under the General Education Department as well as colleges, universities and professional institutions under the Higher Education Department. With the final scheduled to kick off at 12.30 a.m. IST on Monday, the government said the move would help students avoid the difficulty of attending classes after staying up late for the match.

The government's decision follows a flood of requests from students and football enthusiasts on social media, urging the Chief Minister and ministers to declare a holiday. Even before the official announcement, several schools in Ernakulam had independently decided to remain closed on Monday in anticipation of the high-profile final.

Kerala's unmatched passion for football is visible across the state, where giant cut-outs of international football stars, massive team flags and colourful banners have been erected at road junctions, playgrounds and public spaces. Fan clubs supporting Spain and Argentina have organised large public screenings and celebrations, turning towns and villages into football festival venues ahead of the title clash.

Higher Education Minister Roji M. John said all higher education institutions, including professional colleges, would remain closed on Monday to allow students to enjoy the final without worrying about travelling to campuses afterwards.

General Education Minister N. Samsudheen also confirmed the holiday for schools under his department through a social media post, saying the government had responded positively to the requests of football-loving students.

With thousands expected to gather at public screening venues and football celebrations planned across the state, Kerala is set to witness another unforgettable night as fans come together to cheer their favourite teams in the FIFA World Cup final.
