Bhubaneswar, 19 July (H.S.)Bhubaneswar: Authorities opened four sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam on Sunday to regulate rising water levels following increased inflow from the upper catchment areas due to continuous rainfall.

According to officials, three gates on the left side and one gate on the right side of the dam were opened to release excess floodwater from the reservoir.

The water level at the Hirakud reservoir reached 611.50 feet amid persistent rains. Inflow into the reservoir was reported at approximately 1,57,442 cusecs, while around 33,000 cusecs of water was discharged through the four opened gates to maintain safe levels.

Prior to the release, sirens were sounded to alert residents living in low-lying areas along the Mahanadi River, urging them to remain cautious.

Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored as inflow continues due to rainfall in the upstream regions. The decision to open the gates was taken as a precautionary measure to manage the rising volume of water and ensure the structural safety of the dam.

Residents in downstream areas have been advised to stay away from the riverbanks and follow instructions issued by local administration.
