Bhubaneswar, 19 July (H.S.): Egg prices have witnessed a notable increase in markets across Odisha due to multiple supply-side and global demand factors, officials said.

Currently, egg producers are selling eggs at around ₹7.15 per unit, while retail prices have surged to nearly ₹9 per egg. The rise has been attributed to increasing global demand and a significant growth in egg exports, which has impacted domestic availability.

Additionally, officials pointed out that extreme summer heat this year has led to a higher mortality rate among poultry, further affecting production levels. These factors combined have contributed to the ongoing price escalation in the market.

Addressing the issue, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallick stated that the government is taking proactive measures to stabilise supply and control prices. “We are currently providing subsidies of up to ₹1 crore and plan to increase this to ₹10 crore in the coming period to boost production and meet rising demand,” he said.

The minister further noted that egg prices are expected to decline only when production increases significantly. To address the supply gap, the government has set a target of producing 2 crore eggs per day in the state.
