Kolkata, 19 July (H.S.): The administration on Sunday resumed the demolition of the office of Trinamool Congress National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee at Amtala in South 24 Parganas, even as the matter is under urgent hearing before the Calcutta High Court. Bulldozers and other heavy machinery have been deployed to raze the five-storey structure, while a large police contingent and fire brigade personnel remain stationed at the site.

The administration had partially demolished the building on Saturday, alleging that it was an illegal construction. The entire night was spent removing furniture and other belongings from the premises before demolition work resumed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Leaps and Bounds, an organisation associated with Abhishek Banerjee, has moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the demolition. However, the administration continued the exercise while the court was hearing the matter.

Besides bulldozers, officials deployed air compressors, vibrators and other modern equipment for the operation. According to administrative sources, the entire five-storey building is slated to be demolished.

The demolition drive, coupled with the legal challenge before the High Court, has triggered significant political attention in West Bengal.
