Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday paid tribute to Bharat Ratna awardee, freedom fighter, and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Kamaraj on his 124th birth anniversary, remembering his historic contribution to nation-building.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to K. Kamaraj on his birth anniversary, describing him as a towering figure of India's freedom movement and an extraordinary public leader who dedicated his life to nation-building. The Prime Minister said Kamaraj's unwavering commitment to education, inclusive development, and the welfare of the underprivileged would continue to inspire generations.

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also paid his respects, describing Kamaraj as a visionary leader. He said Kamaraj devoted his life to the upliftment of the disadvantaged and to safeguarding their dignity and rights. Gandhi added that his legacy of social justice and selfless public service would always be remembered.

K. Kamaraj was born on July 15, 1903, in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. He was one of the prominent leaders of India's freedom struggle and later served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. During his tenure, he introduced far-reaching reforms in the education sector, established thousands of new schools, and promoted initiatives such as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme to encourage children from economically weaker sections to attend school.

Widely respected for his organisational acumen and simple lifestyle, Kamaraj earned a distinguished place in Indian politics. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the nation, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, in 1976.
