New Delhi, July 12 (HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday expressed deep grief over the demise of former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a visionary leader who guided the Gulf nation to remarkable development and prosperity.
In a message posted on social media, the Prime Minister said India remembers Sheikh Hamad as a true friend who played an important role in strengthening bilateral relations.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, former Emir of the State of Qatar.
He was a visionary leader who steered Qatar towards remarkable progress and prosperity. India fondly remembers him as a true friend who played a vital role in strengthening India-Qatar relations. My heartfelt condolences to the Amir of Qatar,
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Royal Family and the people of Qatar, Modi said.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who transformed Qatar into a major global player in diplomacy, energy, media and international investment, passed away at the age of 74, according to Qatari state media.
He ruled Qatar for 18 years after assuming power in 1995 and, in a rare move for the region, voluntarily handed over power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in 2013.
During his tenure, Qatar emerged as one of the world's leading exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), expanded its global investment footprint, launched the Al Jazeera news network, and successfully secured and hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, significantly raising the country's international profile.
