Bongaigaon (Assam), 10 July (HS): Police in Assam's Bongaigaon district have arrested a man for allegedly posing as a qualified doctor and illegally providing medical treatment without a valid licence.
The accused, identified as Nazrul Islam, a resident of Chhoto Barjana village under Jogighopa Police Station and son of Ansar Ali, was arrested in connection with Jogighopa Police Station Case No. 100/2026.
Police said the case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with Section 34 of the National Medical Commission (NMC) Act, 2019, and Section 28 of the Assam Medical Council Act, 1999.
The action followed a written complaint and specific intelligence inputs alleging that Nazrul Islam had been working as a Medical Officer at a private hospital and several private clinics in the Jogighopa area despite lacking a recognised medical degree or valid registration with the Assam Council of Medical Registration (ACMR).
During the investigation, police found that the accused had claimed to possess a postgraduate specialisation in Emergency Medicine and a fellowship in Pain Management. However, the authorities said these qualifications are not recognised by the National Medical Commission.
Investigators further alleged that Nazrul Islam had been treating patients and prescribing allopathic medicines without legal authorisation. He is also accused of using the medical registration number of another registered doctor on his prescription pads to falsely present himself as a licensed medical practitioner.
Following his arrest, the accused was produced before the competent court on Friday. Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify any other offences or individuals linked to the case.---------
